About Ila

Ila and Sudyumna are two forms of the same person in these dynastic stories. Manu’s sacrifice produces a daughter, and divine intervention brings about a change into a son. The later forest episode changes Sudyumna into a woman again. These events are essential to the genealogy rather than a second, unrelated royal biography.

In the Bhagavata account, Manu’s wife Shraddha asks the officiating priest for a daughter, while Manu desires a son. Vasishtha subsequently appeals to Vishnu, and Ila becomes Sudyumna. The narrative therefore begins with differing parental wishes and a ritual whose result does not satisfy Manu.

THE STORY

Life & Stories

The Forest and Pururavas

While hunting with attendants, Sudyumna enters the forest associated with Shiva and Uma. A divine condition governing the place transforms the visitors. In the female form, Ila meets Budha, the son of Soma; their union produces Pururavas. His descendants establish the lunar royal line, even though Ila’s own ancestry leads back to Manu and the Sun.

The Return to Royal Life

Vasishtha seeks help for Sudyumna after the transformation. The Bhagavata describes Shiva granting an alternating condition: one month male and the next female. Sudyumna resumes royal life, and eventually entrusts the kingdom to Pururavas before retiring to the forest. The Vishnu Purana instead emphasizes restoration through Vishnu and names Sudyumna’s other sons.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

The connection between Surya Vansh and Chandra Vansh is a relationship between families, not a claim that one dynasty disappears into the other. Ila belongs to Manu’s household, while Pururavas begins the royal succession associated with Budha and Soma.

Role

Ila is the child of Vaivasvata Manu whose life is also told under the male name Sudyumna. As Budha’s partner and the parent of Pururavas, Ila connects Manu’s solar ancestry with the royal beginnings of Chandra Vansh.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The accounts differ in the divine intervention and the form of Sudyumna’s restoration. The alternating monthly condition belongs specifically to the Bhagavata telling; it should not be presented as the wording of every Purana. Budha is the lunar deity, not the Buddha.
