About Saudasa

The Panchala Chyavana is his grandfather. His son Somaka has a hundred sons, including the youngest, Prishata. Drupada is Prishata’s son, so Saudasa is an earlier ancestor of the later Panchala court rather than one of Drupada’s companions.

Somaka and the Later Royal House

The genealogy continues from Saudasa through Somaka to Prishata and Drupada. Drupada’s household later becomes central to the Mahabharata through Draupadi and Dhrishtadyumna. These later figures descend from the same family but belong to different generations.

The account gives Saudasa a family position rather than a separate cycle of personal adventures. His place is defined by his father Sudasa and his son Somaka. Stories about the Pandava Sahadeva, the Magadha Sahadeva or the Solar Saudasa belong to their own households.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

His two names refer to one person within this Panchala family. The name Sahadeva does not identify him with the Pandava brother or Jarasandha’s son, and the name Saudasa does not make the Solar king’s personal story his own.

Role

Saudasa, also called Sahadeva, is the father of Somaka in the Vishnu Purana’s Panchala genealogy. He is the son of Sudasa and belongs to the older ancestry of Drupada’s royal house.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The Pandava Sahadeva and the Magadha Sahadeva, Jarasandha’s son, belong to other households. The solar Saudasa also has a different ancestry. The Panchala ruler is identified by his father Sudasa and his son Somaka, rather than by those namesakes’ individual stories.

The Vishnu Purana gives Chyavana, Sudasa, Saudasa and Somaka as successive generations after Mitrayu. A Bhagavata translation groups Chyavana, Sudasa, Sahadeva and Somaka as Mitrayu’s sons. The succession here follows the Vishnu Purana; the different arrangement is not silently combined with it.
