About Angada

Angada belongs to the generation after Rama and his brothers. His father Lakshmana is one of Dasharatha’s four sons, making Angada a nephew of Rama. Chandraketu is the other son named for Lakshmana in this account. Together they form one branch of the larger Ikshvaku royal family.

The Next Generation of Rama’s Family

The family history names Kusha and Lava as Rama’s sons, Angada and Chandraketu as Lakshmana’s, Taksha and Pushkara as Bharata’s, and Subahu and Shurasena as Shatrughna’s. Angada and Chandraketu therefore belong to Lakshmana’s household, while the children of the other brothers are their cousins.

Before listing these children, the narrative describes Rama’s return from Lanka, Bharata’s campaign in the Gandharva country and Shatrughna’s defeat of Lavana at Mathura. Those events concern their fathers’ generation. The children continue the family after that earlier royal story, with the later main succession traced through Rama’s son Kusha.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Angada is part of the wider family descended from Dasharatha, beyond the direct line through Rama’s sons. The brief notice identifies his father and brother but does not narrate a separate series of personal exploits.

Role

Angada is a son of Lakshmana, one of Rama’s brothers. The Vishnu Purana names him together with his brother Chandraketu when describing the next generation of the Ikshvaku family.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

Lakshmana’s sons are named alongside the children of his three brothers. That grouping presents several related households, rather than a single succession in which every cousin becomes the next ruler.
