THE STORY

Life & Stories

The Loss of the Kingdom

The Haihayas and Talajanghas defeated Bahu and overran his country. With his authority broken, he withdrew into the forest together with his wives. This exile creates the setting for Sagara’s unusual birth: the future restorer of the dynasty does not begin life in an undisturbed royal court.

One of Bahu’s queens was pregnant. Another queen, jealous of her, administered poison intended to prevent the birth. In the Puranic account the poison kept the child in the womb for seven years. Bahu grew old and died near Aurva’s hermitage before the delayed child could be born.

Aurva Protects the Unborn Heir

The pregnant queen prepared to follow Bahu onto his funeral pyre. Aurva stopped her because he knew she carried a son destined to become a powerful king. She accepted his intervention and remained under his care. When the child was born, the poison was expelled with him, and Aurva named him Sagara.

Aurva raised and instructed Sagara, including instruction in sacred learning and weapons. When Sagara learned from his mother why they lived in the hermitage and what had happened to his father’s realm, he resolved to recover it. His eventual campaign belongs to the son; Bahu’s own part is the defeat, displacement and death that give that recovery its family purpose.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Bahu’s life explains why Sagara’s rise is narrated as restoration rather than the foundation of an unrelated kingdom. The endangered pregnancy and Aurva’s protection preserve the dynasty through a period when royal power itself has failed.
