About Vrika

This branch of Surya Vansh descends from Mandhata through Purukutsa and Trasadasyu. It later reaches Trishanku and Harishchandra before continuing toward Bahu and Sagara. The succession describes several generations of the same house, not one group of contemporary rulers.

IN THE TRADITION

Recorded Context

His Place in the Royal Family

Vrika follows Ruruka as his son in the succession. Vijaya is the preceding grandfather’s generation. The line then passes to Bahu and, in the following generation, to Sagara. These generations belong to the same royal succession. They connect an earlier household to the later members of its family, even where the account passes over a reign without recounting a separate adventure.

The Surrounding Royal Story

Purukutsa’s earlier journey with Narmada restores the Nagas’ kingdom, while the later account turns to Trishanku’s relationship with Vishvamitra and Bahu’s loss of his throne. These are different episodes at different points in the family. The intervening ancestors connect them genealogically rather than participating in every event.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

This place in the succession connects the older house of Purukutsa with the later kings remembered for royal trials, exile and recovery. A father-and-son sequence gives those stories a family setting without treating an ancestor’s deed as an inherited personal achievement.

Role

Vrika is a king of the solar dynasty of Ikshvaku, named in the Vishnu Purana as the son of Ruruka and the father of Bahu.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

Vrika is remembered chiefly through this royal genealogy. The surviving notice identifies his family position, but gives no separate account of his wars, marriages or personal weapons. His place in the dynasty is clearer than the details of his individual reign.
