About Janaka

This Janaka is the successor of Nimi and the father of Udavasu. The names Mithi and Vaideha belong to the explanation of his unusual birth and the identity of the royal house associated with Mithila. The later Siradhvaja, also called Janaka, appears many generations afterward.

THE STORY

Life & Stories

A Successor for Nimi’s Kingdom

After Nimi lost his bodily life through the mutual curses between himself and Vasistha, his body was preserved until the sacrifice had ended. The gods offered Nimi restoration, but he refused a return to ordinary embodiment. The kingdom therefore remained without a living ruler to carry its succession forward.

The sages, concerned about the absence of a ruler, brought a prince forth from the preserved body. The narrative calls him Janaka and explains the name in relation to his birth. It also calls him Vaideha because of Nimi’s bodiless condition, and Mithi in connection with the process of agitation through which he emerged.

The Earlier Janaka and Sita’s Family

The new ruler’s son was Udavasu. The succession then proceeds through Nandivardhana, Suketu, Devarata and a long sequence of kings before reaching Hrasvaroman and his son Siradhvaja. Siradhvaja discovers Sita while ploughing sacrificial ground and becomes her father. That event belongs to the later Janaka, not to the founder Mithi.

The repeated use of Janaka makes the distinction particularly important. A profile of the founder explains the beginnings of the house; a profile of Siradhvaja explains the household into which Sita is received and her marriage to Rama. Their connection is descent within the same dynasty, not a single life extended across every occurrence of the name.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

The founder’s story explains how Videha’s royal line continues after Nimi chooses bodiless existence. It also supplies a clear starting point for reading Mithila’s genealogy without losing the distinction between a dynastic name and one particular king.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The Vishnu Purana presents Janaka, Mithi and Vaideha as names of Nimi’s successor. The Ramayana instead places Mithi between Nimi and the first king named Janaka, preserving a different account of the dynasty’s beginning.
