About Nimi

Nimi belongs to Ikshvaku’s family but begins the branch associated with Videha and Mithila, rather than the main succession through Vikukshi. His story explains both the dynasty’s origin and the association of his name with the opening and closing of living creatures’ eyes.

THE STORY

Life & Stories

The Dispute with Vasistha

Nimi planned a lengthy sacrifice and asked Vasistha to officiate. The sage was already engaged in a sacrifice for Indra and said he would come after completing it. Nimi gave no answer. Vasistha took the silence as agreement, but Nimi proceeded with Gautama and other priests rather than waiting.

When Vasistha returned and discovered the change, he cursed the sleeping king to lose bodily existence. On waking and learning what had happened, Nimi pronounced a corresponding curse upon his teacher. The account traces the rupture to an unresolved misunderstanding and the anger that follows, rather than to a battle between royal armies.

The Bodiless King and the New Dynasty

The priests preserved Nimi’s body while completing his sacrifice. The gods then offered to restore him to bodily life, but he declined. He described separation of soul and body as a cause of suffering and asked instead to dwell in the eyes of living beings. The story connects their blinking with his continuing presence.

Because the kingdom needed a successor, the sages worked upon Nimi’s preserved body and brought forth Janaka, also called Vaideha and Mithi. This is the origin account for the continuing Videha line. Janaka-Mithi belongs to an early generation of the dynasty, long before Siradhvaja Janaka, Sita’s father.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Nimi joins royal genealogy to questions of embodiment, mortality and continuity after death. The dynasty survives through an exceptional birth, while its founding ancestor chooses a form of existence that is no longer ordinary kingship.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The Vishnu Purana combines Janaka, Vaideha and Mithi as names of Nimi’s successor. Other genealogical tellings can arrange the names differently; the connections here retain the structure of this particular account.
