About Kritaka

Chyavana is his father and Suhotra his grandfather. His son Uparichara Vasu has several children, including Brihadratha, through whom the account reaches Magadha’s royal family. Kritaka therefore stands between the early Kuru branch and a ruler whose own story receives fuller treatment.

Before Uparichara Vasu

The Mahabharata describes Vasu as a king of Chedi favored by Indra. Vasu’s sons receive separate regional responsibilities, including Brihadratha in Magadha. These episodes explain the later setting of Kritaka’s descendants, while belonging to Vasu rather than being achievements assigned to Kritaka.

The branch later reaches Brihadratha and his son Jarasandha. Jarasandha is born in two parts that the being Jara joins together; his name recalls that joining. After him the list continues through Sahadeva, Somapi and Shrutashravas, identifying these rulers with Magadha. The episode belongs to Jarasandha’s birth, not to the life of every ancestor in the branch.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Kritaka’s place gives Uparichara Vasu a named connection back to the Kuru ancestry. The later association with Chedi and Magadha does not make his family a wholly separate descent without Paurava roots.

Role

Kritaka is the royal ancestor named as Uparichara Vasu’s father in the Vishnu Purana. He belongs to the branch descending from Kuru through Sudhanush.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The Bhagavata names the ancestor between Chyavana and Uparichara Vasu Kriti. The Vishnu Purana uses Kritaka in that adjoining position. The same immediate father and son identify the corresponding part of the family even though the form of the name differs.
