About Kuru
Through his father, Kuru descends from Riksha and Ajamidha in the Paurava line. Through Tapati, his family is linked to the Sun. He is therefore both a particular royal ancestor and the figure whose name helps identify the sacred district and the later dynasty.

ROLE & ESSENCE
Attributes & Significance
Kuru explains both a place-name and a shared ancestry. Later members of the Kuru house are not all his immediate children, and a king named Parikshit in this early generation is not automatically Arjuna’s grandson.
Role
Kuru is the king whose name is attached to Kurukshetra and the Kuru royal house. He is the son of Samvarana and Tapati, the daughter of Surya.
TRADITION & MEANING
Traditions & Interpretations
The Mahabharata gives a differently arranged list of Kuru’s sons. Its account of Kuru’s sacred field can be read alongside the Puranic branches without merging every adjoining name into a single universal genealogy.
