About Kuvalayashva

Kuvalayashva is the son of Brihadashva and grandson of Shravasta. Dhundhumara is his victory-title, not a separate descendant. The royal line continues through Dridhashva, one of the sons who survives his encounter with Dhundhu.

THE STORY

Life & Stories

The Defeat of Dhundhu

Dhundhu had been harassing the sage Uttanka. Kuvalayashva confronted the Asura, and the Vishnu Purana describes the king as inspired by Vishnu’s power. He destroyed Dhundhu and was consequently called Dhundhumara, the destroyer of Dhundhu. The divine assistance belongs to this episode rather than establishing that every member of his dynasty possesses the same power.

The victory was accompanied by severe loss. The king went into the encounter with twenty-one thousand sons, and Dhundhu’s fiery breath consumed almost all of them. Dridhashva, Chandrashva and Kapilashva survived. The account therefore combines the familiar royal duty of protecting an ascetic with a family catastrophe, rather than presenting an effortless triumph.

The Surviving Royal Line

Of the three surviving sons, Dridhashva is named first and carries the continuing succession. His son is Haryashva; the line then proceeds through Nikumbha, Sanhatashva, Krishashva and Prasenajit to another Yuvanashva. That later king becomes the parent of Mandhata in a different extraordinary birth story.

Keeping the survivors visible makes the genealogy understandable: Kuvalayashva’s other sons belong to the Dhundhu story, while Dridhashva’s descendants provide the chain followed by the royal list. The survival of the dynasty after a disastrous battle is part of the episode’s consequence, not merely an isolated feat of combat.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Kuvalayashva represents protective kingship sustained by divine aid and shadowed by personal loss. His title preserves the deed for which the genealogy remembers him, while his surviving sons explain how the early Ikshvaku house continues toward Mandhata.
