THE STORY

Life & Stories

Narmada’s Mission

The Nagas had lost their dominion and precious jewels to the Mauneya Gandharvas. Unable to restore their position, they appealed to Vishnu. He promised to enter Purukutsa, Mandhata’s son, and bring an end to their fear through him. The Nagas then sent Narmada to obtain the king’s help.

Narmada led Purukutsa into the regions beneath the earth. Filled with the deity’s might, he destroyed the hostile Gandharvas and returned to his palace. The account gives Narmada an active part as the one who brings the defender to the Nagas; she is not simply mentioned as a wife after the conflict.

The Nagas’ Gratitude and the Royal Succession

In gratitude, the serpent chiefs granted Narmada a protective association: the remembrance and invocation of her name would guard against snake poison. The blessing is addressed to Narmada, while Purukutsa receives a promise that the line of his descendants will continue without being cut off. These are related but separate consequences of their assistance.

Purukutsa and Narmada have a son, Trasadasyu. The succession proceeds through Sambhuta and Anaranya, then further generations toward Trishanku. The protective promise and the family list therefore belong to the same narrative movement: an expedition that restores the Nagas’ kingdom also becomes the setting for the endurance of a human royal line.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Purukutsa links the solar dynasty with Narmada, the Nagas and the subterranean world. His victory is explicitly dependent on Vishnu’s aid, while Narmada’s intervention and blessing explain a devotional tradition of protection associated with her name.

Traditions & Interpretations

The Ambarisha named as Purukutsa’s brother is Mandhata’s son. Other kings called Ambarisha occur elsewhere in the solar genealogies; sharing that name does not collapse their generations.
