About Mahavirya

Videha is the royal house associated with Mithila. Its origin is traced through Nimi, a son of Ikshvaku, and the extraordinary birth of Janaka-Mithi. It is related to the wider Ikshvaku family while retaining its own succession and its own household of Sita.

His Place in the Royal Family

Mahavirya follows Brihaduktha as his son in the succession. Devarata is the preceding grandfather’s generation. The line then passes to Satyadhriti and, in the following generation, to Dhrishtaketu. These generations belong to the same royal succession. They connect an earlier household to the later members of its family, even where the account passes over a reign without recounting a separate adventure.

The Surrounding Royal Story

The founding story tells how sages produced Janaka-Mithi from Nimi’s preserved body after Nimi declined a return to bodily life. Much later, Siradhvaja discovered Sita in a furrow while preparing sacrificial ground. The kings listed between those figures connect the two households; the founder’s birth and Sita’s discovery are not adventures of every intervening ruler.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

This position helps trace Sita’s royal household back through the older Videha succession to Nimi’s branch of the Ikshvaku family. It makes the relationship between Mithila and the larger solar dynasty visible without merging their separate royal lines.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

Mahavirya is remembered chiefly through this royal genealogy. The surviving notice identifies his family position, but gives no separate account of his wars, marriages or personal weapons. His place in the dynasty is clearer than the details of his individual reign.
