About Riteyu

Raudrashva is his father, and Rantinara is his son in the Vishnu Purana. His brothers are individually named, including Kaksheyu and Vaneyu. The later descent follows Riteyu, but this does not make the other sons aliases of him or remove them from the same household.

The Branch Through Rantinara

Rantinara’s sons are Tansu, Apratiratha and Dhruva. Tansu’s son Anila becomes the father of Dushyanta, while Apratiratha’s line leads through Kanva and Medhatithi to a Brahmin family. Riteyu’s descendants thus include more than the royal route through Dushyanta; the same extended family also contains a separately described teaching lineage.

The later branch reaches Dushyanta and Shakuntala’s son Bharata. Bharata’s succession becomes a separate turning point when the royal line continues through Vitatha, identified with Bharadvaja in this account. The genealogy then divides among several families, including the ancestors of Hastinapura and Panchala. These are later descendants, not events personally performed by the earlier ancestor.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Riteyu is the connection between Raudrashva’s ten-son household and the later branching of Rantinara’s descendants. Identifying him by both his father and his son keeps this portion of the royal succession precise.

Role

Riteyu is the Paurava ancestor through whom the line of Raudrashva continues toward Rantinara and Dushyanta. He is one of ten brothers in the royal genealogy.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The Bhagavata retains Riteyu’s position but calls his son Rantinava. Its line toward Dushyanta then passes through Sumati and Rebhi, where the Vishnu Purana gives Rantinara, Tansu and Anila. The adjoining generations therefore vary between the tellings.
