About Ahamyati

Samyati is his father and Bahugava his grandfather in the Vishnu Purana sequence. His son Raudrashva has ten sons, including Riteyu, whose descendants carry the branch onward to Rantinara. Ahamyati therefore stands immediately before a significant expansion of the named family.

The Father of Raudrashva

The genealogy does not pass directly from Samyati to the ten sons of Raudrashva. Ahamyati and Raudrashva are two distinct intervening generations. Keeping them visible makes it possible to distinguish a direct child from a grandson or a more distant descendant when exploring the early Paurava house.

The later branch reaches Dushyanta and Shakuntala’s son Bharata. Bharata’s succession becomes a separate turning point when the royal line continues through Vitatha, identified with Bharadvaja in this account. The genealogy then divides among several families, including the ancestors of Hastinapura and Panchala. These are later descendants, not events personally performed by the earlier ancestor.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Ahamyati connects a short succession of individual ancestors with the larger household of Raudrashva. The family route that later reaches Dushyanta follows Riteyu, one of Raudrashva’s sons, rather than treating all ten as one person.

Role

Ahamyati is a Paurava ancestor and the father of Raudrashva in the early lunar royal genealogy. He belongs before the generations leading to Dushyanta and Bharata.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The Bhagavata also names Ahamyati between Samyati and Raudrashva. Ahamyati here is a royal individual with a named parent and child. Ahamkara, the philosophical principle of individuation, belongs to a different kind of account and is not another form of this king’s name.
