The Grandfather of Three Royal Sons

Pratipa’s eldest son Devapi adopts forest life, while Shantanu becomes king. The account then explains the drought during Shantanu’s rule through the question of the elder brother’s right to succession. These events occur in the household of Dilipa’s grandsons; they are not adventures of the earlier Dilipa himself.

The line later reaches Pratipa, the father of Devapi, Shantanu and Bahlika. Shantanu’s household brings together Bhishma through Ganga, and Chitrangada and Vichitravirya through Satyavati. This places the earlier ancestor before the immediate family crisis that eventually produces the generation of Dhritarashtra and Pandu.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Dilipa connects the older succession from Jahnu with the immediate royal ancestry of Shantanu. His position also shows why three brothers can found different later branches while sharing one grandfather.

Role

Dilipa is the Kuru ancestor who becomes Pratipa’s father and Shantanu’s grandfather. He belongs to the lunar royal family, distinct from the solar kings who share his name.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The solar ancestry of Bhagiratha also contains a Dilipa, while Raghu’s family has another similarly named king. The Kuru Dilipa belongs to the lunar branch defined by Riksha before him and Pratipa after him, with Shantanu in the following generation.
