About Samvarana

Riksha is his father, and Ajamidha is his grandfather in the Vishnu Purana. Tapati is the daughter of Surya. Their son Kuru gives his name to Kurukshetra, placing Samvarana at the point immediately before the royal house acquires its familiar Kuru identity.

THE STORY

Life & Stories

Exile and Restoration

The Mahabharata describes famine, disease and military defeat during Samvarana’s reign. The Panchalas overcome his forces, and the king withdraws with his household and ministers to refuge near the Sindhu at the foot of the mountains. Vasishtha eventually comes to the exiled family. Samvarana asks the sage to become his priest, and with his support regains the capital and royal authority.

Tapati and the Sun

Another part of the epic describes Samvarana’s devotion to Surya through offerings, vows and austerities. Surya regards him as a worthy husband for Tapati. During a hunt, Samvarana loses his exhausted horse and encounters the radiant maiden alone on the mountainside. The meeting begins the story through which the dynasty explains its descent from the Sun’s daughter.

The Father of Kuru

Samvarana and Tapati become the parents of Kuru. The epic connects Kuru with the sacred field he cultivates through austerity. Through this child, Samvarana’s family continues into the larger royal ancestry that later includes Shantanu, Bhishma and the generations preceding the Pandavas and Kauravas.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

His restoration explains the recovery of an endangered royal house; his marriage explains a divine-family connection within that same house. Both belong to the history of the Kuru ancestors, before the principal conflict of the Mahabharata.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

The epic describes the family’s exile with a duration of a thousand years. This belongs to the narrative’s exceptional timescale; it does not provide a modern historical date or an ordinary lifespan for Samvarana and every descendant of his household.
