THE LIVING ARCHIVE
About Punarvasu
His family belongs to the Kukkura branch descended through Andhaka from Satvata. Above Punarvasu, this ancestry passes through Abhijit, Bhava, Viloman and Kapotaroman. Below him, it divides between his son Ahuka and daughter Ahuki. Ahuki is therefore Ahuka’s sister, not his daughter. Punarvasu’s place in the family is a human relationship, distinct from the lunar mansion that shares his name.

ROLE & ESSENCE
Attributes & Significance
Punarvasu is a common ancestor behind Krishna’s maternal relatives and Mathura’s royal household. Remembering Ahuki as well as Ahuka also preserves a daughter who would disappear if the ancestry were reduced to a list of male heirs.
TRADITION & MEANING
Traditions & Interpretations
The royal Punarvasu is identified by his father Abhijit and children Ahuka and Ahuki. The nakshatra called Punarvasu is a different subject; the shared name does not make the royal genealogy a description of the sky.
