About Shakuni
The Yadavas are the descendants of Yadu, a large royal family with several branches. Shakuni belongs to the branch traced through Kroshtu, Jyamagha and Vidarbha. Vidarbha’s son Kratha begins the succession that eventually reaches him. His grandfather is Navaratha, and his descendants include Devarata, Devakshatra and the royal Madhu. These family relationships place him among the ancestors of Satvata rather than among the people involved in the Pandavas’ dice game.

ROLE & ESSENCE
Attributes & Significance
Shakuni’s family continues toward the Satvatas, whose later branches include the Andhakas and Vrishnis. Those houses become important in Krishna’s family history. His place in that ancestry is his principal role here; the account does not preserve a separate episode from his reign.
TRADITION & MEANING
Traditions & Interpretations
Two distinct royal families have a Shakuni. Dasharatha’s son belongs to this Yadava succession; Gandhari’s brother belongs to Gandhara and takes part in Duryodhana’s plans and the dice game.
