About Janamejaya

His named son is Prachinvat. The sequence proceeds from Prachinvat through Pravira and Manasyu, then continues through further generations toward Dushyanta. Calling him Puru’s son identifies the particular Janamejaya intended here; it does not place him in the household that survives the Kurukshetra war.

The Early Paurava House

Puru’s descendants form a broad royal family rather than a single line containing only the familiar epic heroes. Janamejaya stands near the beginning of the branch that will eventually include Bharata. Prachinvat, Pravira and Manasyu retain their own places between this early ruler and the later figures whose stories receive fuller treatment.

The later branch reaches Dushyanta and Shakuntala’s son Bharata. Bharata’s succession becomes a separate turning point when the royal line continues through Vitatha, identified with Bharadvaja in this account. The genealogy then divides among several families, including the ancestors of Hastinapura and Panchala. These are later descendants, not events personally performed by the earlier ancestor.

ROLE & ESSENCE

Attributes & Significance

Janamejaya links Puru with the long royal succession that reaches Dushyanta and Bharata. His place near its beginning distinguishes this early Paurava king from the later Janamejaya, who belongs to Parikshit’s family in a different generation.

TRADITION & MEANING

Traditions & Interpretations

Parikshit’s son Janamejaya belongs to a much later Kuru generation. The identical name does not make that king a direct son of Puru.
